Obituary

Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Socha, of Cudjoe Key, Florida, a devoted husband, father, and friend, passed away after a long illness with his wife by his side, on November 1, 2024, at the age of seventy-two. Born on December 8, 1951, in Lancaster, England, Bernie was a man of compassion, humor, and loyalty whose presence left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Bernie is survived by his loving wife, Jo Socha; two children, Haley Socha and Matthew Socha; two grandchildren, Max Antonio and Jack Bernard; his Golden Retriever, Zeus and four siblings, Christine McEneny, Margaret Socha, Joan Kinder, and Kenneth Socha.

Bernie was a proud and dedicated husband and father, leaving a legacy of love.  He guided his children with kindness, humor, and a strong sense of responsibility, instilling in them values that will carry on for generations.

Bernie's greatest joy was living on an island in the Florida Keys. He loved spending time on the boat, fishing, diving or hanging out on the sandbar. He was over the top with joy when his children and grandchildren would come to visit. He was a prolific reader of mystery and suspense novels, and faithfully followed the New York Mets baseball team. Bernie's laughter and enthusiasm were contagious, and he brought a joyful spirit to every occasion, especially those spent with family and friends.

Bernie graduated from Iona College in 1974 with a degree in Sociology and studied Criminal Justice at Rollins College (Class of 1985), he received his Captain's boating license in 2007. In his professional life, Bernie was a dedicated supervisor and sergeant for 28 years with the Volusia County Sheriff's Department and was highly respected for his integrity and work ethic.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 8, 2024, at his home, 20750 1st Ave West, Cudjoe Key, FL and December 8, 2024, 1pm at the cemetery, Daytona Memorial Park followed by friends and family gathering at the Ocean Deck 127 S. Ocean Ave, Daytona Beach 3-6. All who knew Bernie are invited to celebrate his life in either location. In honor of our island traditions, we ask that dress be kept casual and men wear a fishing shirt. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Seacamp, 1300 Big Pine Ave, Big Pine Key, Fl 33043 or www.seacamp.org, honoring Bernie's dedication to creating awareness in children of the fragile marine world.

Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Socha will be deeply missed, but his love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
