Obituary

With heavy hearts, the family of Darren deMaille of Murrells Inlet, SC regret to announce his untimely death on August 24th, 2025 while vacationing in Key West, FL. Darren was born in Bridgeport, CT on February 24th, 1977 to Nancy and Alfred deMaille. From a very early age, Darren exhibited natural talent in many sports, encouraged by his loving grandmother, Alice, who recognized and nurtured his abilities. After his first love, baseball, Darren discovered a passion for golf to last a lifetime. Following earning his B.A. in Golf Management from Campbell University in 1995, Darren pursued his love of teaching, establishing a coveted reputation and legacy in the world of golf instruction, beginning with his time at The Country Club of Fairfield (CT) under the mentorship of Jack Druga. A prestigious role ensued, with Darren instructing at The Bear's Club in Jupiter, FL where he proudly taught grandchildren of the great Jack Nicklaus. In 2006, Darren became Head Pro of The Bridge Golf Club in NY, notably founding their state-of-the-art Learning Center, and published a popular weekly golf instruction column in Bridgehampton's Dan's Papers. Darren relocated his family to SC in 2016, starting his own "Double D" golf academy located in Little River, and later, Garden City, while also penning instructive articles for The Brunswick Beacon and serving as an adjunct instructor at the Golf Academy of America. Known for his enthusiastic support, Darren volunteered his specialized instruction for the Stand Up and Play Foundation, Project Golf, PGA Hope, PGA Junior League, and First Tee, among other programs where he relished helping golf be accessible for everyone. Hundreds of Darren's entertaining instructional videos and webinars continue to be watched millions of times by thousands of aspiring golfers. Darren evolved his innovative Quick Fix Golf teaching academy from in person to online training, then tackled the novel challenge of app development, creating the QuickFixGolf app to fulfill his vision of providing virtual swing analysis to golfers anywhere. Among accolades too numerous to recount for his altruism, Darren was named a GRAA Top 100 Teaching Professional in 2020, 2022 and 2024, and recognized several years in a row as Best Golf Teacher on the Grand Strand in repeat local readers' choice awards. During the pandemic, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce recognized his dedication and talents, naming him their 2021 Entrepreneur of the Year. But beyond his 20-year Class A PGA membership, Darren was a trusted advisor and thoughtful friend for life to the many blessed to know him, some even lovingly referring to him as "Doctor." He loved Jimmy Buffett, yacht rock, boating and fishing, lobster, Clicquot and cutlets; a better-than-Michelin chef, Darren's memorable menus are already greatly missed. Most importantly, Darren was an extraordinary husband and devoted father who longed for nothing more than watching his three beloved children grow up. His initials "DAD" were most appropriate since being a father was his proudest achievement.  Surviving Darren are his three children, adoring wife Leanne Shelley deMaille, mother Nancy Lee deMaille, sister Meghan Lee deMaille, and nephews Cody Michael Forte, Nathan Turner, and Matthew Comers deMaille. He was preceded in death by his father Alfred Paul deMaille, and brother Patrick deMaille. The family especially thanks compassionate staff at Casa Marina and The Reach, Anna Anglin and the Key West PD, Bree with Victim Advocates, Sandy with Delta EYW, Steve Reeves, and Dr. Cori Convertito. A gathering of family and friends will celebrate Darren's life Sunday, October 5th, 4pm at Wild Wing Plantation in Myrtle Beach. In lieu of flowers, a Spotfund has been created to help Darren's family pay for final expenses – http://spot.fund/9tdjccdce
