Donald G. Waite, 70, of Cudjoe Key, FL., passed away suddenly. Born on June 26, 1956. Don lived a life defined by service to his country, devotion to his family, and a personality that was larger than life. Don proudly served in the United States Navy for 21 years, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Following his military career, he found a second family at the legendary Rick’s Café in downtown Key West, where he worked for 23 years and became well known by coworkers, locals, and visitors alike for his wit, work ethic, and unmistakable personality. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Patrice (Wewers); his children, A.J., (Maisie), Dominic and Molly Waite, and his cherished grandchildren, Carley, Haylie, Augustin, and Bradley Waite. He is also survived by his siblings: Kathy Kobasic (Dave), David Waite (Jeanne), Dan Waite (Lee) and Dennis Waite (Pam), along with many nieces, nephews, and countless friends who became like family over the years, especially his Class of 1974 classmates. Don was passionate sports fan whose loyalty to Cleveland’s teams never wavered, even when his colorful critiques of coaches, players and referees could be heard by anyone within earshot. He loved golf and enjoyed participating in golf leagues and spending time with friends on the course. His Catholic faith remained an important part of his life. Whether praying or faithfully participating in Mass online, he found comfort and strength in his relationship with God. Those who new Don will remember his bold, salty sense of humor. He had a gift for making people laugh, telling stories that grew just a little better with every retelling, and speaking his mind without apology. Through highs and lows and stormy seas, Don’s legacy is one of honor, laughter, perseverance, and love. He served his country with distinction, worked hard throughout his life and treasured the people fortunate enough to know him. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created, the stories he told and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
