Douglas Macarthur
Jones, Sr
April 22, 1942 – February 13, 2025
Douglas MacArthur Jones Sr. left this world peacefully on February 13th, at the age of 82. A long-time resident of Key West, and former Monroe County Commissioner, Doug spent the last years of his life living among family in the Tampa area.
Born in Alabama on April 22, 1942, Doug moved to Key West with his mother, Ruth, when he was 2 years old. He met and fell in love with his childhood sweetheart, Nancy Lee Smith when she was 11 and he was 12. The couple were married in 1961 and enjoyed 47 happy years together.
As an entrepreneur, Doug owned several small businesses, most notably, Old Island Fumigation. As an avid diver and maritime salvager, Doug was part of the team that discovered the wreck of the Isaac Allerton, the story of which Doug narrated for the Key West Shipwreck Museum.
Doug had a true heart of service. He served his country as an Army Reserve, and the citizens of Key West and Monroe County as a Reserve Police Officer, Reserve Sheriff's Deputy, and as a Monroe County Commissioner from 1988-1993. Doug positively influenced the lives of countless generations of young men as a coach at the Mary Immaculate High School and the junior football league. He dedicated his time to his church in many ways, including his favorite activity, picking up the elderly and infirm for church every Sunday morning. Most of all, he served his family as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He communicated his love through acts big and small; building dollhouses, coaching teams, rebuilding cars, never missing a game or performance, making sure he was always home for dinner, and caring for Nancy as she lost her life to a long-term illness in 2008.
Doug is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Lee Jones (née Smith), baby daughter Deborah Lee Jones, and eldest son, Douglas MacArthur Jones, Jr. He is survived by his son Jason Lee Jones, Daughters-in-law Danielle Gallo Jones, and Christine Aiello Jones, and his granddaughters Macie, Maren, and Amelia. He is also survived by his second wife Betty Ford Jones, and her extended family.
Funeral services will be Friday, February 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the Key West United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his honor.
