Obituary

Douglas Grant Walker

December 11, 1940 - April 4, 2026

Key West, Florida and Cambridge, Maryland

Douglas Grant Walker of Key West, Florida and Cambridge, Maryland, passed away at his home in Key West on April 4th, 2026.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 11, 1940 to the late George Washington Walker and Gwendolyn Grant Walker, Doug - affectionately known as “Dougie” - attended St. Paul’s Episcopal School for Boys and Towson High School. Following graduation, he volunteered for the United States Air Force in Airborne Radar and Navigation with the Strategic Air Command Air Refueling Division, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After four years of service, Doug earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Baltimore. He began his professional career with John B. Braine, Inc. on Wall Street, working in investment counseling and investment banking for the oil and gas industry. Later, he became Vice President of Manufacturing for Flynn & Emrich Company in Baltimore and Hanover, Pennsylvania. His entrepreneurial spirit eventually led him to purchase his first business, Beacon Industries, Inc., in Westminster, Maryland, which manufactured animal health care products and automatic feeders. He subsequently acquired Penn-Mar Castings, Inc., a foundry in Hanover, Pennsylvania, which manufactures gray and ductile iron castings.

In 1992, Doug arrived in Key West on his boat and shortly thereafter purchased Key West Oceanside Marina, where he lived for eight memorable years. His passion for building inspired him to improve the marina by adding residential condominiums, a dry-storage boat building, and a restaurant before selling the property in 2004. He went on to develop, build, and invest in numerous other real estate projects in the Keys, including re-building the home he and Linda shared in Shark Key until his passing.

In 2008, Doug returned to his Eastern Shore roots, purchasing and developing a 36-acre waterfront peninsula - lovingly dubbed “Walker Point” by his brother Randy – where he built a main house and four cottages for family and friends as a summertime retreat. Doug, Linda, and their loved ones created cherished memories during summers spent there.

Doug loved discussing business, investments, construction, and politics, but his greatest joy was his family. He will be remembered for his loving and generous heart, his playful sense of humor, and his endless supply of stories - earning him the affectionate nickname “Walkie Talkie”. He was admired for his adventurous youthful spirit, sharp business acumen, ability to “see around the corner,” unshakeable optimism, and deep compassion and generosity - especially for students seeking higher education.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Linda A. Walker of Key West and Cambridge; his son, Douglas “Grant” Walker, Jr. (Jenna) of Cambridge; his daughter, Edith S. Walker, of New Castle, Colorado; four cherished grandchildren - Hemingway Harris, Lincoln Walker-Harris, Aurora Walker, and Lillie Walker; his sister, Anne Holmes of Washington, D.C.; his first wife, Arden Scott, of Southern Pines, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and his beloved dog, Ghost - all of whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert “Bobby” Walker (Sue) and George Randolph “Randy” Walker (Carol).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Spedden United Methodist Church, 881 Hudson Street, Cambridge, Maryland, with a reception to follow immediately after at Walker Point, 5305 Ragged Point Road, Cambridge. A celebration of Doug’s life for his Key West friends will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Spedden United Methodist Church, the Florida Keys SPCA, or to a charity of your choice in Doug’s name.

Dougie will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
