Edward Toppino,
Sr
December 23, 1924 – March 9, 2025
With hearts full of gratitude for a life well-lived, we honor the memory of Edward Toppino Sr., who passed away peacefully at the remarkable age of 100. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, Edward was a man whose impact reached far beyond his family—he was a cornerstone of his community, a dedicated patriot, and a beacon of integrity, hard work, and kindness. Born in Winter Park, Florida, to Paulo (Charley) and Orsolina Toppino, Edward's journey was one of perseverance, love, and unwavering dedication. From a young age, he learned the values of commitment and resilience—qualities that defined every chapter of his life. In 1943, Edward married the love of his life, Emma Elizabeth Macarthy, with whom he built a beautiful life and a loving family. Together, they raised four children: Paul, Cassandra, the late Edward Toppino Jr., and Victoria Toppino Soladare. His family continued to grow, becoming his greatest source of joy and pride, as he welcomed nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. In 2000, he found love again with Betty Lord, who became his cherished companion in his later years. A Life of Service and Sacrifice. Edward answered the call to serve his country in 1943, enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. He fought with extraordinary courage in the 35th Infantry Division, under the command of General George S. Patton III, facing the trials of war with resilience and honor. His selfless bravery earned him the distinguished Purple Heart, a symbol of his sacrifice and deep patriotism. Yet, Edward's service to his country did not end on the battlefield. He dedicated his life to supporting and uplifting those around him, playing a pivotal role in the development of Key West, the city he called home since 1940. Working alongside his Father Charley, four brothers—Philip, Frank, George, and Paul—at his father's company, Charley Toppino and Sons, Inc., Edward's entrepreneurial spirit helped shape the local economy, creating opportunities and prosperity that would benefit generations to come. A Legacy of Leadership and Community Edward was not only a successful businessman but a true civic leader, whose influence touched nearly every aspect of Key West's development. He held numerous leadership roles that reflected his dedication to service, including:
• President of the Chamber of Commerce
• Board Member of the Aqueduct Authority of Key West
• Director of the Key West Port and Transit Authority
• President of the Key West Country Club
• Board Member of the Sons and Daughters of Italy
• Member of the Licensing Contract Board of Monroe County
• President of the Monroe County Republican Club
His leadership extended beyond the local level, as he was honored to serve as a delegate to the Republican National Convention for President George W. Bush and attended the historic inaugurations of both President George W. Bush and President Ronald W Reagan. For over 50 years, Edward was a steadfast supporter of military service members as a dedicated member of the Military Affairs Committee. His commitment to giving back was further exemplified through his involvement in the Key West Rotary Club, where he held the distinction of being its longest-standing member, contributing to its mission for more than five decades. A Man of Integrity, Strength, and Generosity To those who knew him, Edward was more than a leader—he was a man of deep integrity, humor, hard work, kindness, and generosity. His wisdom was sought after, his laughter was infectious, and his unwavering support lifted up everyone in his presence. He led not by words alone, but by the strength of his character and the example he set. His impact stretched far beyond titles and accolades—it was felt in the countless lives he touched, in the friendships he built, and in the community he helped shape. Edward Toppino Sr. leaves behind not just a legacy, but a lasting imprint on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man who lived with purpose, who loved with all his heart, and who dedicated his life to service in the truest sense. A Final Farewell.
