Georgia Whitman
Parks
September 7, 1942 – October 28, 2023
On October 28, 2023, the Lord called another one of his earthly angels to heaven to be with Him. Georgia Whitman Parks made the unexpected passage and is now in Heaven with her family and friends.
Georgia was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on September 7, 1942 to Elsie Heil Whitman and George Whitman. She graduated from Scottsbluff High School in May, 1960 and continued her education with an Associate of Arts degree from Scottsbluff College in 1962 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado State College (now known as Colorado State University) in 1964. That same year, Georgia met and later married her husband of almost 60 years, John G. Parks, Jr. (retired Certified Public Accountant) in Chicago, Illinois and the following year their first son John Whitman (JW) Parks was born. After her husband's US Army tour, they moved to Gainesville, Florida for John to finish his education and in 1968 they moved to Miami, Florida where Georgia and John welcomed their second son, Patrick Delaney Parks. The Parks family settled in Key West in 1971 and have lived here since.
Georgia had a passion for teaching Kindergarten which started in Chicago, Illinois and continued to Newberry, Florida, Miami, Florida, and finally Key West, Florida where she devoted over 21 years to the Monroe County School System, teaching at Douglas School, Mary Immaculate School, and Poinciana Elementary School. Georgia was a kind, professional, and dedicated teacher who was loved by her students and colleagues alike. After retiring, she would often run into her former students and they would express their gratitude and share fond memories of their time in her classroom.
In 1983, the Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce named Georgia "Teacher of the Year" from Poinciana Elementary School. Georgia was also honored to serve as a member of the Board of Directors at Wesley House and enjoyed singing with Keys Chorale. She was a wonderful person and lived an exemplary life as a wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Georgia was loved and cherished by all who knew her; she will be missed but never forgotten.
Georgia is preceded in death by her parents Elsie and George Whitman and a stepfather, Bill Williamson, and her husband's parents, Gilmore and Louisa Parks. Georgia is survived by her husband John, sons JW (Marisol) of Key West, Florida, and Patrick (Chelle) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and grandchildren Jordan and Mary Elizabeth Parks of Key West, Florida and Katie and Lia Parks of Colorado Springs, Colorado. We love you; you were the rock of our family.
