James "Junior"
Milstead
September 22, 1934 – September 18, 2024
James "Junior". Milstead had many friends in Key West. He was very generous and helpful friend to many. Born September 22nd, 1934, he was five days short of his 90th birthday. After graduating from high school, James was drafted by the US Army, serving his time in Alaska. After his tour with the Army in Alaska, James went to work as an apprentice machinist in the civilian service at U.S. Naval Base, Key West, Florida. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, James continued to work for ship's department at the U.S. Naval Station, Key West, Florida, until it closed in 1974.
James then went on to work for the Public Works Department, NAS, Key West, as an equipment inspector. Upon his retirement, James started a second career as an employee for the City of Key West Public Works Department. James married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Joyce, also known as "Mermaid", Milstead. Joyce preceded James in death. Together, they raised four sons. James Jr., John, Jerome, and Joseph. James was an avid race boat enthusiast and set the speed record in the Miami Marine Stadium in his class. The record still stands today.
James was very adventurous and became a licensed aircraft pilot owning his own plane.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 1030 a.m. at the Dean-Lopez Funeral Home at 418 Simonton Street Key West FL, 33040. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the United Way of Key West.
