Obituary

Red-haired, proudly Irish, and fittingly fiery of spirit, Joyce was an adventurer, a restauranteur, an antique dealer, a sailor, a loving mother and grandmother ("Mimi"), and a bit of a pirate, among other things.  Joyce was born in Gardiner, Maine on September 6, 1941.  She went to Gardiner High School, and graduated in 1959.  She attended the University of Maine in Farmington, then married Jack W. Boynton, and had her beloved son, Christopher.

Joyce became an antiques dealer in Hallowell, Maine, joining the many antique dealers in the central Maine area in mischief and shenanigans.  She then opened Mariah's Restaurant, specializing in continental cuisine, in Hallowell, Maine, where she served fancy snails and genuine delight.  She was an absolute pro at making people laugh, feel special, and at sharing her infectious joie de vivre.

After Mariah's closed, Joyce continued to work in food services and hospitality in both Boothbay Harbor, ME and Key West, FL, and kept dabbling in antiques.  As it happened, Key West was a perfect fit for Joyce.  The diverse, exciting, and celebratory nature of the place drew her right in.  And she never had to shovel snow there.  Eventually she opened her own business, Island Antiques (which was her second pride and joy after Christopher). She would have been delighted to tell you about all of her celebrity encounters in the area (Bill Murray was such a nice man), or her encounters with the cousins of celebrities who may have graciously provided her with a signed photo of Andy Garcia.  While residing in Key West, she lived in a sailboat, in an apartment, then bought a home on Watson Street, eventually then moving to Laird Street and her final home, which she always improved upon and treated as a showplace.  It was, in fact, like her second antique shop.

Joyce became a well-loved member of the Key West community.  She was a staple at yard sales and a go-to person for jewelry of both high quality and glorious kitch.  Also in Key West, she found the love of her life and long-term partner, Michael Chodzin, who predeceased her.

Joyce came to Key West with pretty much nothing, and ended up establishing a business and home for herself through her dogged work ethic, and her stubborn, oh-so-relentless, never give up nature.

She loved a good adventure to the end, and in her later years became quite a seasoned world traveler, going with close friends to visit Scotland, France, Morocco, Italy, Greece, and Turkey, among other places.  This was significantly more enjoyable than her previous adventures on the high seas in her earlier years, when she worked on a boat that sailed around the east coast.  She and the rest of the crew ended up abandoning said ship during a hurricane, fortunately going ashore in New York.

Just recently, Joyce passed on the responsibilities of her beloved Island Antiques shop to Rocky and Martha, whom she deemed suitably exceptional to carry on the establishment.  Unable to contain her fervor for all things old and rather dusty, Joyce continued to work through them selling antiques until she passed away.

Joyce passed at the age of 83 on September 25, 2024, at her home in Key West, FL.  She was predeceased by her parents Roy McGee and Doris Ralston McGee, and her brother-in-law Don Vigue.  She is survived by: her son, Christopher R. Boynton, and his wife, Jennifer Tandy C. Boynton, and much beloved grandson, Jack T. Boynton; her sister, Barbara McGee Vigue, and nephews Peter Vigue and Seth Vigue; and her cousins Gail LaHaye and Donna Brann. She also leaves behind her dear friends and carriers-on of her beloved Island Antiques, Rocky and Martha; her accomplice Dennis "The Bagpiper"; her stalwart friend and helper Alan; dear friends Marianne, Carolyn, and Adrienne; and her special, long beloved friend, David Turner.

There will be a memorial for her in Key West in February, and a memorial for her in Maine in the spring. More details to come.
