KIT CROWL &
WILLIAM CROWL
In loving memory of Kit Crowl & William Crowl, a beloved brother and sister and cherished members of the Key West Community. Kit passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Key West last month and Bill passed away peacefully in his sleep this past November aboard his sailboat, the “If”, in Key West Harbor. Both Kit and Bill were raised in New England, in Kittery Point, Maine. And their lives both ended unexpectedly just 4 months apart in Key West, Florida. Kit made her way to Key West in her teens working on a shrimp boat with Captain Ray. She later came ashore and began a lengthy career at Sloppy Joe’s Bar. Last May marked her 45th year of continuous service at Sloppy Joe’s which granted her the title of “the longest serving employee”, a title she was immensely proud of. To Kit, Sloppy Joe’s was far more than a workplace. It was a second home filled with lifelong friendships and chosen family. She was eagerly looking forward to celebrating her 50th year there and she had no plans to retire. Kit was probably best known for becoming a devoted rescue “Mom” to German Shepard dogs for years and years. She lovingly referred to her dogs as her “kids” and she leaves behind sweet Luna, who was her final rescue. Luna has been adopted by Kit’s sister, Celia, and is presently still patrolling her house and yard. Bill was a lovable character who lived on the waterfront as part of the live-aboard community. He is best known for his big heart, kind spirit and big dreams. He was a lover of the sea, sailing , and happy hours, always and forever optimistically planning his grandiose future. In his early years Bill was a gifted chef who started his own restaurant on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He later moved to Key West and worked at notable Key West restraurants including Antonia”s and Louie’s Backyard. In his retirement, he enjoyed crewing for boats on passage from Cuba to Maine. Both Kit and Bill leave behind some heart broken friends and family but they should be remembered for the joy they found in life’s simple pleasures, days at the beach at Fort Zach , eating lobster rolls, hosting dinner parties and baking rum cakes for friends and family. We will forever miss Kit’s joyful laugh and Bill’s big bear hugs but their spirit will forever remain in this island they loved and in the lives they touched and in the memories they created with those who were lucky enough to know them. A memorial for them will be hosted by Sloppy Joe’s on May 14th from 10-12 am. Followed by an ash scattering at sea on a sunset cruise with family and friends on May 15th.
