Martha Alfonso, beloved wife, mother, abuela, great grandmother, and tía, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 29, at the age of 81. Martha was born on August 31, 1943.
Born and raised in Key West to Josefa and Arcadio Rodriguez. Martha attended the Convent of Mary Immaculate and later graduated from Key West High School in 1961. Her professional journey began as an Office Manager at Coca-Cola, but she quickly found her true calling in the school food system, where her talents for bookkeeping and accounting flourished. She dedicated many years of service to the Monroe County School District, retiring as Manager of School Food Service. Afterward, Martha continued serving her community by working as a Deputy Clerk for the Clerk of the Courts.
Martha's true legacy, however, lies in the countless lives she touched. She cherished spending time with her family and friends, always making herself available to listen, offer advice, and share her warmth. Known for her generous spirit, Martha was quick to lend a helping hand, whether it was through financial support, sharing food, or offering clothing. Her heart knew no bounds, and she found joy in giving to others.
Martha will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who have had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and a lifetime of wonderful memories.
She is preceded in death by her husband – Gustavo Alfonso; Parents – Josefa and Arcadio Rodriguez; In-laws – Consuelo and Oswaldo Alfonso Sr., and Oswaldo Alfonso Jr.; Brothers – Arcadio (Jean) Rodriguez, Nilo (Kathy) Rodriguez, and Eloy Rodriguez; Son – Gustavo Alfonso Jr.; Grandson – Gustavo Alfonso III. She is survived by her children – Jose Hernandez (Kristie), Matthew Alfonso (Cheryl), and Stephanie Alfonso (Gaye). In-laws – Charla Rodriguez and Danny and Chomi Oropeza. Grandchildren – Ashley Perry (Gregg), Amber Hernandez, and Amanda Alfonso (Mark) Great grandchild – Gustavo Alfonso IV Numerous – nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
The family will hold a viewing on Sunday, February 9 from 2pm – 4pm at Dean Lopez on 418 Simonton Street.
Funeral mass will take place on Monday, February 10, at 11am at The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1010 Windsor Lane.
