Winona Adele
Sanchez
September 30, 1936 – September 5, 2023
Winona Adele Sanchez RN, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Friday, September 5, 2023, Tamarac, Florida.
Winona was born at home, September 30, 1936, in Santa Rosa, Florida and grew up playing on the dunes of Santa Rosa Beach. She received her BSN degree from Florida State University and while wrapping up her degree in Miami she met the love of her life, José, "Josie". They married August 1, 1959, and lived in Waco, Texas at the expense of the United States Air Force until mid-1961. They then moved to Atlanta, Georgia until they moved to Josie's hometown of Key West, Florida in 1964. Winona spent her next 50 years enjoying all the island life had to offer. To her family and friends, she was known as Noni. She was an integral part of the medical practice she and Josie created and in that arena she was known as Noni the Nurse. She loved boating, fishing, FSU football and for some reason mowing the lawn. During her time on the Island, she actively participated in and supported both Saint Mary's Star of the Sea and Mary Immaculate schools and actively practiced her Catholic Faith at The Basilica of Saint Mary's Star of the Sea Church including being a founding member of Saint Mary's Bereavement Ministry. But her biggest passion was her beloved Josie, whether dancing, dining, traveling, or boating, it was always "Noni & Josie". At work or play, they were never apart. She spent the last 9 years of her life living with her youngest daughter, LuWin in Ft Lauderdale and Tamarac, Florida.
Winona was predeceased by her father, John H. Ziel and her mother, Winnifred Sims Ziel, her sister, Shirley Ziel Hall and her beloved husband, Dr. José T. Sanchez Jr. She is survived by her children: José T. (Marie) Sanchez III, Diana M. (Gary) Vincent and LuWin (Arnaldo "Tito") Sanchez; grandchildren: Kyle Y. Sanchez and WinDi L. (Alex) Sanchez Soler; great grandchildren: Westley M. Sanchez Soler and Eli T. Sanchez Soler. Winona has a niece, nephews and cousins in the Florida Panhandle (Ziels) and Canada (Sims) that she stayed in contact with and who will also miss her.
